Our Shop-Glossary
Here you will find a summary of all terms used in the shop in one place.
D'Appolito
A loudspeaker design system that, among other things, provides for the symmetrical arrangement of two (woofer) midrange drivers around a tweeter. The D'Appolito arrangement is intended, among other things, to reduce floor/ceiling reflections and increase maximum sound pressure.
D/A converter
Short for digital-to-analogue converter. Usually a signal processor that converts digital signals into analogue. Our nuControl preamplifier, for example, converts the internally digitally processed signals into analogue ones before outputting them via stereo cinch or XLR. See also A/D converter.
Data rate
The data rate plays a role in hi-fi and home cinema for audio and video files. It describes the amount of data that a device processes per second (about megabits per second). Higher data rates tend to indicate higher quality recordings, although other factors such as the codec used also play a role.
DBA
Stands for Double Bass Array. A system concept that uses multiple subwoofers for more even sound distribution and cancellation of room modes.
Delay
Delay refers to the (intended or unintended) delay of an audio signal. Some hi-fi and home cinema devices have functions to compensate for delay differences between different sound sources or picture and sound offsets.
Digital
Unlike analogue audio and video devices, digital ones process discrete signals that can only take on specific values. In commercial binary digital, all information is composed of only two states, one and zero (power on, power off). See also analogue.
Digital amplifier
Class D amplifiers are often mistakenly referred to as digital amplifiers. In the nuPro series, "real" digital amplifiers are used, insofar as the sound signals are only converted back to analogue by means of a low-pass filter shortly before output.
Dipole speaker
In a dipole loudspeaker, one of the drivers on the front of the speaker (usually the tweeter) is opposed by a second driver on the rear, which is connected in reverse polarity. The indirect sound radiated by the rear chassis gives the speaker a sound image that is perceived as "airy".
Dolby
The Dolby company has been developing technologies in the audio and video sector since the 1960s. Well-known are, for example, the earlier noise reduction processes for compact cassettes (Dolby A, B, C, S and HX) as well as the multi-channel sound formats Dolby Surround or Dolby Atmos.
DTS
DTS has been developing technologies in the audio and video sector since the 1990s. The multi-channel sound format DTS-HD, for example, is well known.
DVD
Stands for Digital Versatile Disc. An optical storage medium on which, among other things, sound and video information can be stored in digital form.
Dynamics
In music reproduction, dynamics refers to the difference in volume between the loudest and softest sounds of a piece. The highest possible dynamic range is desirable.
