The symmetrical D'Appolito arrangement of the drivers enables wide dispersion, for maximum speech intelligibility for everyone on your sofa.

Centre

The centre is the real star in every home cinema, because in percentage terms it has the largest share in a film due to the dialogue. The nuLine CS-174 will convince you with details and depth at the highest level.

At home in the home cinema

The three-way technology of the CS-174 makes it the ideal combination with either two CS-174s set up vertically as front speakers in the surround or the nuLine floorstanding speakers with the same technology: 264, 284, 334.

Made for stereo

The nuLine CS-174 has been developed for hi-fi applications, as the asymmetrical tweeter already makes clear. Two speakers combined on the lowboard guarantee the highest level of detail.

Details

nuOva tweeter

With the nuLine CS-174, the tweeter is separated at 2,050 Hz. The nuOva tweeter is a sophisticated high-tech product that has been optimised for minimal resonance. The main reason for this is the damped rear volume chamber, which ensures very fast decay. Your advantage: More details and a clear reproduction of music.

Midrange speaker

The midrange driver of the nuLine CS-174 works seamlessly below the tweeter in the range from 490 Hz to 2,050 Hz. It uses a flat cone with a compact diameter that combines detailed mids and homogeneous omnidirectional response. Another big advantage is the interaction with the tweeter, which can work even better due to the almost flush surface. Your advantage: impressive voice reproduction with precise localisation.

Woofer

The woofer of the nuLine CS-174 reproduces the bass part of the music or movie and thus relieves the midrange driver. The longstroke technology in combination with a bass reflex port allows the speaker to reproduce a lower cut-off frequency of 42 Hz at almost full level. Your advantage: controlled and linear bass reproduction at all volumes.

Crossover

The crossover is the control centre and heart of the nuLine CS-174. Durable components ensure accurate reproduction and linear sound for decades. The switches on the back directly influence the crossover, allowing seamless switching between sound modes. In addition, the crossover has self-resetting fuses that protect the drivers from overload.

Colours

Our nuLine series relies on the high-quality lacquer finishes black and white, which are applied in several layers and sanded again and again for a perfect surface finish with a softline edge. The third option is a real highlight: the real wood veneer in walnut. This makes each model truly unique, just as with our limited Corten Edition to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our constantly improving nuLine series.

Design

In the nuLine series, clear shapes with delicate softline curves give the models a timeless elegance. Acoustic considerations are also at the forefront of the design process, as slightly rounded edges ensure less edge dispersion, as does the asymmetrical arrangement of the tweeters. This is matched by the elaborately calculated metal grille, which has hardly any measurable effect on the sound.

Series overview

Our nuLine series is not only Made in Germany, but also committed to honest sound: All speakers reproduce music neutrally and thus exactly as it was recorded. What's more, with 10 models in this series, we have the widest variety for all applications, from wall or ceiling speakers, compact and floorstanding speakers to the Dolby Atmos-certified add-on speaker nuLine RS-54. Low-frequency support is provided for all of them by subwoofers from the nuSub-Series.

Safety Instructions

  • Turn off the amplifier before connecting the speaker cables.
  • Ensure the speaker cables are securely connected.
  • Place the speaker only in a dry location.
  • Do not expose the speakers to direct sunlight.
  • Overload: The nuLine CS-174 has internal protections against amplifier overload. However, it should be noted that even a weak amplifier can damage a speaker. At high volume levels, weak amplifiers tend to distort, which places extreme stress on the tweeters. If the sound reproduction becomes distorted at a certain point, please reduce the volume on your amplifier.

Cold Weather and Sound

When speakers are shipped and delivered during the cold season, they must adjust to the temperature of the living space before use. Low temperatures significantly affect the moving parts of a speaker, such as the diaphragm/voice coil, surround, and centering spider. These components' ability to follow rapid vibrations or make large excursions is severely limited. While this is not dangerous, "frozen" speakers will not deliver their optimal acoustic performance. Therefore, our tip: If your new speakers arrive on a cold winter day, allow them a few hours to acclimatize. Your Nubert speakers will reward you with the superior sound quality you rightly expect from us.

Connection Instructions

Please ensure that your amplifier/receiver is turned off before connecting the speakers. Refer to your device's user manual for detailed instructions on connecting the speakers to the amplifier/receiver.

Care and Cleaning Tips

Warning!

Improper handling of the speaker may cause damage.

  • Turn off your amplifier before cleaning the speaker and disconnect the speaker cables from the terminals if necessary!
  • Before resuming operation, ensure all connections are correct, no short circuits are present, and the speaker is completely dry!
  • Do not use harsh cleaning agents or solvents such as gasoline, alcohol, or similar substances!

Cabinet

We recommend using a commercial glass cleaner sprayed onto a cotton cloth. This easily removes most fingerprints and dirt. Alternatively, you can use active foam window cleaners. We advise against using microfiber cloths as they can cause small scratches on the surface. For veneered cabinets, we recommend suitable furniture care products.

Diaphragms and Speaker Chassis

To remove dust from a speaker chassis, use a lint-free cotton cloth to gently wipe the diaphragm with minimal pressure. The tweeters of all Nubert speakers are equipped with protective grilles, allowing them to also be wiped gently. If the dust cannot be completely removed, a makeup brush from a drugstore works well.

Box type and placement

The nuLine CS-174 is a top-class centre speaker that fits particularly harmoniously into a surround system with the three-way floorstanding speakers nuLine 264, 284 and 334. Considering the low cabinet height and the two relatively small 12 cm woofers, it has a surprisingly deep bass response and, with 230 watts, an amazingly high power handling. The horizontal dispersion exceeds that of our two-way centres in terms of homogeneity, so that even listeners sitting sideways can fully enjoy the sound. The loudspeakers of the nuLine series are developed in Schwäbisch Gmünd and manufactured according to our specifications at a long-established specialist company for sound furniture construction in Germany.

Construction principle and housing

Three-way centre speaker in bass reflex design. The high sound quality of the nuLine CS-174 is realised with the filter optimisation of the three-way principle adopted from our top series nuVero. In this way, the development team Günther Nubert and Thomas Bien succeeded in significantly increasing the sound purity of conventional three-way designs, especially in the critical mid-range, while at the same time achieving a very even horizontal dispersion behaviour.

The elaborately crafted cabinet is made of 19 mm thick, veneered or multi-layer lacquered MDF material and is manufactured by an experienced sound furniture specialist in Germany. To ensure that the rear sound components of the woofers and midrange drivers do not interfere with each other, the midrange/tweeter group has its own acoustically precisely tuned inner cabinet, which also serves to reinforce the outer walls. This high constructional effort results in a total weight of 18 kg and is reflected in a rarely realised precision of the sound image, which is maintained up to the highest dynamic jumps.

Tweeter

In the tweeter range, the nuOva tweeter, a completely new development for nuLine, is used with special sound guidance and a specially damped rear volume chamber. Its acoustically optimised sound front makes it possible to further increase the differences in distance between the dome and the cabinet edges compared to the previous asymmetrical Nubert tweeters, which further reduces the edge dispersion in the axial direction and noticeably increases the clarity in the high frequency range. At the same time, the chassis can be moved closer to the midrange drivers, which is in line with the ideal of a point source without having to accept the disadvantages of a coaxial system.

Midrange speaker

For the first time Nubert uses flat diaphragm drivers. At the beginning of the development work, it was confirmed that flat diaphragms were more susceptible to disturbing partial vibrations than similarly sized cone diaphragms. By fine-tuning the multi-layer diaphragms, which have a honeycomb structure (honeycomb technology), it was possible to shift the disturbing natural resonances step by step into the high frequency ranges, where the midrange driver no longer works at all, but the radiation is almost completely done by the tweeter. In contrast to cone speakers, the majority of the surface of these optimised midrange drivers is flush with the baffle, creating a favourable environment for the adjacent tweeter, which helps it to achieve even better radiation characteristics.

Woofer

Another new development is the 12-centimetre long-stroke woofer, two of which are used in the nuLine CS-174 centre speaker. These high-tech drivers, equipped with double magnets, enable an optimum ratio of large cone excursion, maximum bass response and amplifier-friendly efficiency. This has resulted in highly resilient long-stroke woofers whose polypropylene diaphragms can deflect up to 20 mm in extreme cases.

Crossover

The crossover of the nuLine CS-174 is a masterpiece in itself when it comes to filter technology. Here, the signals arriving from the amplifier are divided into three frequency ranges with particular precision using a special crossover technology, whereby the drivers receive their final sonic polish via sophisticated compensation circuits. In order to realise the typical Nubert quality standards, no less than 34 high-quality components were necessary, including close-tolerance film capacitors in the midrange and treble range. The low crossover frequency at 2.05 kHz frees the midrange driver from higher frequencies and, in conjunction with the deliberately small design, ensures an exceptionally wide dispersion pattern. An efficient protection circuit watches over the safety of the drivers and the crossover. If there is a risk of thermal overload, it cuts the amplifier current and automatically returns to normal operation once the danger has passed.

Switching options

The upper switch between the terminals of the terminal allows a three-stage modification of the high-frequency range from "soft" to "neutral" to "brilliant", which allows the speaker to be individually adapted to the acoustics of different living rooms or personal listening preferences. With the second tone selector switch, the bass level can be moderately lowered. This switch variant ensures that an undesired increase in the bass level can be compensated for when the speaker is placed close to a wall.

Connection terminal

The extremely solid, gold-plated screw terminals of the bi-wiring terminal are also suitable for cables with a very large cross-section. Bi-wiring terminals allow the tweeter and low/midrange to be connected separately to the amplifier. This is a measure that can prevent sound loss with long cable lengths. In addition, the sound selector switches described above are located on the terminal.
